If you know me, you know that the X-Men were the first group of super heroes I fell in love with. If it weren’t for the animated series that aired on Fox in the 90s, I would not be the comic book savant that I am today had it not been for that show and the comics it led me to read.

The first trailer for 20th Century Fox and Marvel Entertainment’s final attempt to get a solo Wolverine movie right has been released and at a first glance it looks like it has potential to be knocked out of the park. The most frustrating thing for me being an X-Men fan is the material is endless for them. Fox has all the tools to compete with Marvel Studios’ Avengers movies and director Bryan Singer has proven it in the past with his original X-Men films and Days of Future Past (2014); but fact of the matter is there is yet to be a solid Wolverine movie. I enjoyed James Mangold’s The Wolverine (2013) literally up until the third act and it made it all the more frustrating for me to walk out of a movie that was good for literally 2/3 of it. Now, Mangold is back and so is Hugh Jackman for what he is saying will be the last time he will play Wolverine, and if he sticks to it, it will be the end of an era. Jackman is probably one of the only comic book actors who has been as solidified in his role as Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man or Christopher Reeves’ Superman.

Anyone who wanted a movie adaptation to Naughty Dog’s game, The Last of Us (2013), will surely jump for joy when they watch this trailer. Hugh Jackman looks more along the lines of Joel than he does Logan and the world looks just as bleak; and in Joel/Elle fashion, it looks like Logan may be looking after someone he’s a little reluctant to at first. It’s clear this world is far different from the one we’re used to in the colorful and action packed X-Men series and instead we’ve been dropped into a dystopian and desolate world where mutants are few and far between. Wolverine/Logan has swapped the mutton chops for a weathered full beard and he’s even accompanied by a significantly aged (maybe even blind?) Charles Xavier who seems to be hanging out in a makeshift Cerebro – begging the question, what happened to the old one?

Xavier being the only recurring X-character in this movie outside of Wolverine warms my heart and gets me excited just like I was for The Wolverine. Some of the best Wolverine storylines portrayed the character as more of a loner and distancing himself from the pain he’s caused and the pain he’s had to endure. Wolverine is probably one of the most enduring Marvel characters of all time, comparable to Spider-Man. If this really is the end of the line for Wolverine and Jackman’s portrayal of the character, then this western/dystopia/loner vibe clearly influenced by the Old Man Logan storyline is the way to do it. Part of me wishes this movie were shot in black and white due to the killer B&W photos that Mangold shared on his twitter page; but one can only dream.

Logan (2017) opens in theaters March 3rd, 2017.
